Yesterday was quite possibly one of the most impactful days I have ever had.

I tried a new activity called “The Baggage Activity”. I asked the kids what it meant to have baggage and they mostly said it was hurtful stuff you carry around on your shoulders.

I asked them to write down on a piece of paper what was bothering them, what was heavy on their heart, what was hurting them, etc. No names were to be on a paper. They wadded the paper up, and threw it across the room.

They picked up a piece of paper and took turns reading out loud what their classmate wrote. After a student read a paper, I asked who wrote that, and if they cared to share.

I’m here to tell you, I have never been so moved to tears as what these kids opened up and about and shared with the class.

Things like suicide, parents in prison, drugs in their family, being left by their parents, death, cancer, losing pets (one said their gerbil died cause it was fat, we giggled) and on and on.

The kids who read the papers would cry because what they were reading was tough. The person who shared (if they chose to tell us it was them) would cry sometimes too. It was an emotionally draining day, but I firmly believe my kids will judge a little less, love a little more, and forgive a little faster.

This bag hangs by my door to remind them that we all have baggage. We will leave it at the door. As they left I told them, they are not alone, they are loved, and we have each other’s back.

I am honored to be their teacher.

Lisa and I had to get on a flight unexpectedly this weekend to visit someone we love. And yesterday, we flew home. As we took off and got up over Dallas, we were pin-balling around in some terrible turbulence. The kind that makes you close your eyes, collapse into yourself, and get really quiet; the turbulence that turns even the staunchest atheist into a prayer warrior.

In that moment, the teenager next to us, with whom we had not yet shared a word, turned and said very intensely, “I need you to talk to me right now.” He went on: “I have terrible anxiety, and this is my first time to ever fly alone, and this turbulence is messing with me. I need you to talk to me right now!” And so we started talking.

“Hi, I’m Lisa. And this is my husband, Daniel. And we are going to be your best friends for the next 90 minutes. We are so proud of you for telling us what you need! That took a lot of courage and we’d be proud of our own kids for taking the risk you took. We’re all going to be okay, and we’re here for you, so just tell us what you need.”

He told us his name is Braden and that he’s 16, and that he plays the guitar, ukelele and piano. And he told us that he’d just finished recording his first album. I told him that I’ve spent my life recording music, too, and I asked him if he had an album on him that I could buy. He pulled one out of his backpack, signed it, and gave it to me. And I reached in my backpack and gave him all of our traveling cash.

But here’s the most important thing, something that Braden can teach all of us: when you need help from people, take the risk and ask for it. “I need you to talk to me right now.” When life gets turbulent, we tend to close our eyes and collapse inward and get really quiet. But, no, that won’t work! Braden shows us a better way. Look around, open up, put yourself out there, and ask for help.

Yesterday with Braden was holy ground. It was one of the most beautiful conversations we’ve had in a long time. And it’s because someone took the risk of being honest. So be like Braden and take the risk.

8-year-old Thomas Moore made a decision. He was gonna grow his hair out. He wanted to have long hair. And as the hair grew and grew, young Thomas became quite a spectacle at school. Some would point, some would laugh. But some knew the real reason behind Thomas growing his hair out so long.

One day sometime before, he walked up to his mom, and she was watching a video. It was a video about a 5-year-old girl with cancer, and because of all her chemotherapy treatments, she had lost all of her hair. And that touched Thomas very deeply, and he started asking his mom a lot of questions.

He learned that cancer was a very painful thing and the treatments for it can be painful as well… and the hair loss was part of that process. His mom also told Thomas that some kind people will grow their hair out real long so they can eventually have it cut and donate it for wigs to be made from it. And those wigs were made special for those who have lost their hair.

It was at that very moment that Thomas made his decision to grow his hair long… to someday donate it to help a cancer victim. And it grew and grew, until Thomas was told he had grown enough hair to make two full wigs. And recently, he had his hair cut… all 17 inches of it. And the salon lady who cut his hair told him that he actually had enough hair for THREE full wigs.

And young Thomas was ecstatic. He was so happy he could do his part to help those stricken with cancer who have lost their hair from the treatments. And now Thomas is 12 years old, and he’s strongly considering growing his hair out once again.

My son turned 18 in lockdown, has done Year 12 in lockdown and what he has missed out on this year (along with so many other children of Class of 2020) is heartbreaking. But there is a little girl who lives across the road from us who has been learning remotely whilst her single Mum recovers from a broken foot and works long hours from home. This little girl (who is the sweetest kid) has taken a liking to my son and some afternoons when school finishes she knocks on the door and asks if he’ll play basketball with her. So he spends half an hour with her, praising her skills and how great she is. Yesterday as she knocked he sighed as he got up to go, I told him that he could say no if he didn’t feel like it. He replied “Why? She’s 5 and can’t play with her friends. I feel sorry for her”.

All I’ve ever wanted my kids to be, is kind. Others save their siblings lives. Bridger is the latter. He is only six, but he has the empathy, courage, resilience and strength of someone many times his age. We often wonder what we would do if a loved one was in harm’s way. It is easy to think we would risk our lives, but until the situation arises, it is impossible to know. Bridger though didn’t think, he didn’t fear, he didn’t calculate. He just did what needed to be done, taking all the pain himself, so that his little sister wouldn’t suffer. Read the post from his aunt, Nikki Walker (@Nicolenoelwalker), that she posted on Instagram.

“Hey, all. Please, share my nephew’s story so that it gets as much exposure as it can. We know that our little hero would love some words of encouragement from his favorite heroes. On July 9th, my six year old nephew Bridger saved his little sister’s life by standing between her and a charging dog. After getting bit several times on the face and head, he grabbed his sister’s hand and ran with her to keep her safe. He later said, “If someone had to die, I thought it should be me.” After receiving 90stitches (give or take) from a skilled plastic surgeon, he’s finally resting at home. We love our brave boy and want all the other superheroes to know about this latest hero who joined their ranks.”

He started at 2 a.m. on Monday and did not stop cleaning for the next 10 hours. When an organized group of neighbors arrived later that morning to start clearing the damage, they found that Gwynn had already done most of the work.

Gwynn is an 18-year-old high school senior. He told CNN that he saw on the local news that Bailey Avenue in Buffalo was covered in glass and garbage, and he knew people needed to use that street to get to work in the morning.

When word spread of how Gwynn single-handedly took action, his community responded.

Matt Block saw Gwynn’s story on the news and decided to give him his prized 2004 red Mustang convertible. Block, 27, told CNN the car is one he wanted since he was a child, but these days he is only using it occasionally. He saw Gwynn ask for some car buying advice on Facebook, and Matt decided to offer up his sports car.

It turns out that gift has more meaning than Block ever imagined. Gwynn’s mother, who passed away in 2018, also drove a red Mustang. When he realized the coincidence, Gwynn says that he was so shocked he “didn’t have any words,” and Block says it gave him “goosebumps.”

Local businessman Bob Briceland learned of Block’s gift, and he decided to extend a year of free auto insurance coverage through his insurance agency.

“I just felt compelled to help him out. We just need to get together our whole city and show people how there’s so many good people here,” Briceland told CNN affiliate WKBW.

After high school, Gwynn had planned to go to trade school while saving up to go to college. Upon hearing Gwynn’s story, Medaille College in Buffalo offered him a full scholarship where he plans to study business starting this fall. One of his many career goals is to open a cleaning business.

This is the first time Gwynn received this type of recognition for his good deeds, but this is not the first time he stepped up to help others. He is a member of Kappa Phi where he enjoys doing community service, and he helps out at churches.

Gwynn is thankful for the community response, saying, “I appreciate everything everyone is doing for me.”

Hugh Weber took to Twitter and Instagram to share the unfolding story of how a seemingly small and kind action from his daughter, Emerson, has created a tsunami of caring, sharing and goodness.

Emerson, my 11 year old, is on a bit of a wild ride with the US Postal Service and our local mail carrier, Doug.

And, I think there’s a deeper message to it all.

First, the backstory…
Em has a serious letter writing habit. She maintains active correspondence with over a dozen of her favorite people. And, if you’ve been the lucky recipient of one of Em’s hand decorated letters and envelopes, then you have a pretty good idea of the joy they bring.

A letter from Emerson is likely to include some art, a joke or two, a mention of her younger brother, confessions of her love for Taylor Swift and enough questions to guarantee a response.

So, when she decided to thank our mail carrier for the service he provides us, she left nothing out. In went Taylor Swift, in went the little brother, in went the jokes.

Q: Why do you never see elephants hiding in trees?
A: Because they’re really good at it.

Em wrote, “I’m Emerson. You may know me as the person that lives here that writes a lot of letters & decorated the envelopes. Well, I wanted to thank you for taking my letters and delivering them. You are very important to me. I make people happy with my letters, but you do too.” She continued, “The reason you are very important in my life is because I don’t have a phone so how else am I supposed to stay in touch with my friends? You make it possible!” She put it in the box, smiled when he took it & that was enough.
The next day a package arrived with some stamps & two letters.

Doug had shared Em’s letter with his supervisor, Sara, and they both wanted to share how touched they were by her note.

Sara said that, as an essential worker, Doug might not be able to maintain regular correspondence, but she sure could. Em started writing that very afternoon.

This is when things get interesting. The next week, we got a letter address to “Mr and Mrs Weber.” It seems that Sara had shared Em’s note as a “Token of Thanks” in the internal newsletter for the Western US and there were some postal folks that wanted to thank her.

Today, we saw Doug getting out of the truck with two BOXES of letters from around the country. We snapped a quick photo through the door as he and Emerson met for the first time. It was a beautiful moment on silent reciprocity.

These letters are so deeply human. They are filled with family, pets, hobbies, community and an overwhelming sense of kindness.

Because Em was fully vulnerable, they were too.

Em shared jokes, so they shared jokes.

Em share her brother, so every gift that was sent came in duplicate.

Em shared Taylor Swift and it turns out that the US Postal service is filled with lots of undercover Swifties.

One maintenance manager from Minnesota wanted to inspire her to start collecting stamps so he sent along two stamps of his own from the bulletin board in his office to start her collection.

And, they sent stamps to be used as well. Stamps for her to write back. Stamps for her to write others. Stamps, stamps, stamps. (218 by Em’s count.)

But, there was something more in these letters. People felt seen – some for the first time in a long time. “I work alone in a small rural post office…”

“My kids all live far away…”
“Not a lot of people think about how hard we work…” One wrote, “I can’t tell you how much it means to read your letter…” Another,
“I have a son in Kuwait and if you have a second to send him a letter he would love it.” And another,
“I know you can’t write back to all of us, but maybe I can drop you a line from time to time?”

She wrote the dad.
She assured the secret swifties not to be embarrassed because her dad likes TSwift, too.
She acknowledged that there WERE a lot of letter but that she had time.
She sees them all.I’m not sharing this because I’m a proud dad.I’m sharing it because it is relatively easy, if we take the time, to give others the one thing they need to be well – human connection.I have a friend that says we all just want to be seen, known and loved.

For years I’ve travelled the country talking about relationships of influence, but I’ve used that travel as an excuse not to seek the support I know I need.

This pause gave me time to act.

I have incredible family & friends, but the truth is that I needed more.

And, sending texts via an app has been the small step I needed.

For yourself or for others.

There was a rope strung around his neck.

This man was much older, and much stronger than these young boys…but they were the only ones around and therefore the only ones who could save him. One ran for help as the other two held onto him with all they had. Soon others came to grab the man as well and keep him from hurting himself.

While clearly this was traumatic for the boys, they didn’t focus on themselves or their fears and just did what needed to be done. And in doing so, they saved this man’s life.

Jewish philosophy teaches that there is no such things as coincidence. While it would be easy to think that these boys were not the ideal ones to help this man, there is a reason they were at that place at that time. And their incredible courage and quick action is something that impacted not only the man they saved, but clearly their own lives and the lives of so many others.

But in doing so, we forget their abilities and their potential. I don’t know the four kids you are about to read about. I don’t know if they waste hours playing video games, or goof off in school or do other things that maybe they shouldn’t be. But I know one thing. When it boils down to it, these boys are heroes. When they were needed, they acted and did what needed to be done, regardless of the stakes. They didn’t hesitate, they didn’t wait for someone else to take action, they just acted. There is a saying, “Ha’maseh hu haikar” meaning “it is the action that counts.” More than anything else, what we do is what makes the difference. And these boys did exactly what needed to be done, and in doing so, saved the life of Catherine Ritchie. Read what her family had to say:

“Two weeks ago, my 90-year-old mother, Catherine Ritchie, was preparing herself for bed at around 9pm. After brushing her teeth and hair, she turned around to find her bed completely engulfed in flames. She made an attempt to extinguish the flames herself by throwing blankets and pillows on the fire. The smoke and heat were so overwhelming that she immediately got disoriented, gave up fighting the fire, and decided to flee. She pushed the emergency call button she wears on her necklace, called 911, and attempted to get out of her now engulfed bedroom. She walked into the closet several times thinking it was the door that leads to the hallway. It wasn’t. She couldn’t find her way out. She was stuck. Smoke everywhere.

Across the street, 4 boys saw the smoke and reflection of flames. Not an adult in sight. 4 kids who took immediate action to save an elderly woman who they couldn’t guarantee was home and who 3 of them had never even met. One started breaking the glass on the front door. One called 911. One went to the back door and began kicking it in. One went to the neighbors for an ax and help. Within minutes, a door was kicked in by a 14-year-old child who found my mother in the hallway outside of her bedroom and picked her up in his arms. Kids who are told about all the things they aren’t old enough to do saved the life of the most precious and beloved woman we know. Courageous young men. Young men who risked their own lives, their own safety, perhaps their good standing with their parents who might have chosen for them to do otherwise, and they carried my mother out of her burning home into the street, where firetrucks and ambulances would soon arrive.

Dylan Wick – 16 years old, Nick Byrd – 14 years old, Seth Byrd – 16 years old, and Wyatt Hall – 17 years old, thank you! Thank you for your selfless acts of heroism and courage. Thank you for not allowing this to be the tragic end to our mother’s amazing life. Thank you for staying with her, hugging her, and helping her feel less alone until we could get to her. Thank you for being the kind of young men who thought about another person above yourselves. Thank you for staying safe yourselves as well. Thank you to your parents who obviously raised you in such a way that lead to you making life saving and heroic decisions on behalf of someone else. Thank you for more than we know how to thank you for! We will forever be indebted to the time you bought for us and the example you set for us. God Bless each of you for being such a blessing to us.

Sincerely,

Michael Ritchie, Karen Ritchie Sontag, Pat Ritchie, Jimmy Ritchie, Kelly Ritchie, John Ritchie, Tim Ritchie, Tom Ritchie, Missy Ritchie Nicholas, Ryan Ritchie, and 42 very grateful grandchildren.”
