What defines us as human beings is not our ability to think, but rather our ability to speak. Communication is what connects us with others, what allows us to share what is happening in our head and our heart. But when there is that language barrier, when someone can’t express himself because no one understands and no one can communicate his language, it is very lonely and alienating. The Hebrew word for “mouth” is “peh” which is numerically equivalent to the words for “love” which is “ahavah” and “kindness” which is “chesed.” The mouth symbolizes all forms of communication, and teaches that communication should always be a method for transmitting love and kindness. In this moving video, an entire town learned sign language, the mode of communication, that their deaf neighbor needed to speak. And in doing so, they showed their humanity in the most powerful of ways.
