“For anyone who isn’t on Tiktok, I wanted to share a story.

1 week ago, a Tiktok user with Parkinson’s posted a video expressing anger over how tiny the pills for treating Parkinson’s are because it makes them really difficult to pick up when someone has something like, you know, Parkinson’s.
4 days ago a guy who directs country music videos for a living, and was previously most famous on Tiktok for knowing obscure facts about Snapple, taught himself how to use Fusion 360 (a design and modeling tool) so he could design a pill bottle that solves the problem.
Problem was though that he didn’t own a 3D printer so he posted a video of his design and offered to share schematics with anyone who wanted to get it and or improve upon it. All schematics are open source.
3 days ago, dozens of engineers and 3D printer enthusiasts had begun working on the project and started refining and tweaking to get tolerances where they needed to be and ensuring that it actually met the needs of those it was being designed for.
13 hours ago, there is a working prototype, it has “less plastic than your average McDonald’s toy, and should be priced as such”. The original designer has gotten a patent attorney to ensure it remains open source and the patent itself will be donated to the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
In the mean time, for anytime who needs one now and doesn’t want to wait until the manufacturing in scale beings, they can get one at cost from the engineers printing them at home.”

Judaism teaches that “nothing stands in the way of will.” And this non-verbal student proved this when asked to give his high school graduation speech. Ahmed Ali, 21, attended the Minneapolis Public School system’s Transitions Plus Program for the last three years. The program offers additional services and resources for special needs students who may require extra help transitioning from high school to adult life. Ali used the speech software that he had developed alongside his speech pathologist to give the talk. This was a historic first for the school district. And his inspiring words were as incredible as his breath-through use of technology.

“Your life is a relay race. The track is your life. Every time you achieve something you pass the baton to the next person. Guess who you are passing the baton to? It’s you….Each stage of your life you are passing it to a new you. It’s not the end of the line for you, but it’s a new you in our beautiful world.”

Do you ever wonder what it would be like to hang out with your past self? What would you talk about? What questions would you ask? What advice would you give? Photographer Conor Nickerson did just that. In a project called Childhood he photoshopped himself into a number of his childhood photos, so seamlessly that when you look at them it appears he was truly there. And in many ways, I am sure he was. The end result is not just photographic genius, but for the observer, it allows us to think about our own lives: how we were, who we were, and how far we have come. And Nickerson reminds us that sometimes it is nice to go back and spend a little more time with our childhood, a time of innocence, openness and opportunity, and then bring that back to the here and now.

For the vast majority of history, most people have worked in agriculture putting in long, grueling hours simply to ensure survival. The America of the year 1800 employed 83% of the workforce in this manner. How times have changed. We have moved from scarcity to abundance in large part due to the uncanny success of technology and there is no sign of it letting up. If anything, the pace of innovation in farming is accelerating the way it is in many other technological sectors such as manufacturing or medicine. By 1900, the number working on farms dropped to less than 40% and today it is around 1% and still falling. Once subservient to the tyranny of natural cycles, weather and seasons, today we routinely bio hack foods and simulate optimal growing environments to produce virtually anything we want–anywhere and at any time. In season, out of season, matters little in the age of hydroponics and smart automated greenhouses. The traditional pacing and spacing of planting and harvesting now converge. Any stage of the process can happen at any time as we achieve greater virtuosity and ubiquity in our agrotechnological deployments. Given the challenges of tilling rocky fields with ox-drawn plows, it is hard to imagine anyone prescient enough to forecast the modern mastery witnessed in some of our newest agricultural facilities, yet, there is  a curious passage from out of antiquity in the book of Amos (9:13) whereby a time is anticipated wherein “the plowman will meet the reaper….” In the Rabbinical commentary tradition, the verse insists on an age of such massive production that we are still gathering the yield of one crop even as we prepare to plant another. Literally and figuratively, we are accustomed to long periods before we see a return on our investments. They need time to gestate and grow. But this is less of the case in our rapid world of rapid economic exchange. Not only can we grow fresh food out of season, but we can abolish the contingency of seasons and even climate altogether. Inputs and output overlap, merge and become indistinguishable. Our payback period gets shorter and shorter. One might even hazard to suggest, as the Sages of the Talmud did nearly 2000 years ago (Ketubot 111B), that the quixotic dream of ‘instant profits’ may soon be realized with all business cycles shortening, and the day is upon us when ‘the cake leaps forth from the ground’ all ready to eat.
