And when they discovered he needed to in order to pay their bills, they decided to do something about it. The Valdez’s have quite a large TikTok following and had already posted videos of Newey when he would come to their door with his cheery question: “Hello, are you looking for some pizza?” They decided to ask their followers if they would donate to help Newey with his bills, and to their amazement, they raised $12,000 which they were so excited to surprise him with. Having a role model can make all the difference. Fortunately for this young group of boys, an empathetic and caring policeman chose to see their potential and gifted them in so many ways for their future. He knew they might not relate as well to him as to Shaquille O’Neal so that is who he brought to speak to them. Judaism teaches us that we have two eyes, one to look within, and one to look outside of ourselves. The message he gave them resonated because he could see them within him and himself within them. And as Judaism also teaches, words from the heart, enter the heart. And that is exactly what happened through his powerful thoughts, speech and action.

The role of a teacher far exceeds the instruction given in the classroom. A child spends more waking hours in school then in home. So a teacher doesn’t just teach their material, but teachers play a primary role in the guidance and direction of a child and have the ability to influence and impact that child’s life. There is a Jewish concept that one must educate each child according to his or her own way. Each child must receive the individualized approach needed to best succeed. In the case of 13-year-old Damien, what he needed was far more than any teacher could have been expected to give. But Finn Lanning is not your ordinary teacher. He is exceptional, in every way. When he heard that Damien was in desperate need of both a kidney transplant and a stable home, Lanning became his foster parent. And now is in the process to adopt him. Lanning has not only given Damien a chance at a healthy life, but he has provided him with a home filled with support, acceptance and love, things little Damien has never had. And in doing so, Lanning has not only taught everyone about true empathy, but he has taught himself that he is capable of things he didn’t think were possible.

If you have ever wondered if saying “thank you” to someone can make a difference, watch this video. All it took was a short and sweet note to the mail carrier woman to thank her for her hard work during this difficult time, but it brought her to tears. The note didn’t come with some huge gift or wad of cash, just simple words of gratitude. We have no idea what others are going through or the difference that a kind word or small gesture such as a heartfelt smile can make to someone’s life.
