After 15 days in the hospital fighting coronavirus, Christina Paz, a 47-year-old mother of five was discharged. This is incredible in and of itself. But what is most remarkable is the response from the entire medical team at Staten Island University Hospital. All of the doctors and nurses lined the hallways and applauded her as she was pushed to the exit in a wheelchair. They patted her on the shoulder and called out to her, each one celebrating her recovery as their own personal victory. Considering how over-worked the medical professionals are with round-the-clock work battling corona, the fact that they took the time to stop, to recognize this incredible outcome and to share her joy with her, shows that in this crazy time, their humanity and empathy has only been strengthened. Judaism teaches that each and every life is an entire world. During a pandemic, it might be easy to lose sight of that with so many deaths happening all around. But clearly these special doctors and nurses recognized that in saving a life, not only will five children and a husband have their mother and wife back, but an entire world has been saved a well.
