Vermont has one of the oldest populations in the country. And being that the highest risk category for COVID-19 are people over 60, that puts a lot of people at risk. Add to that the rural factor with many people living quite a distance from stores, the fact that stores are selling out of all items and that poverty is all too common so people can’t afford to stock up, and you can imagine the real fear that a lot of Vermonters have. But Vermonters also help one another. Which is why immediately people have been asking what they can do to help. This is one of many examples. But it is a beautiful one. When I went to sign up, you can choose if you need help or if you can provide help. And then what it is you need or can do. The help ranges from picking up or dropping off groceries, being willing to talk to and offer support to those in isolation who are lonely or scared, going with people to appointments or others way to help. We often hear the stories of those who are hoarding needed supplies or price gouging…but look more closely and there are so many who are reaching out to support and be there for others in need, at a time when uncertainty seems to be at an all time high.
