For over four hours, each of these truckers sat parked, united in their desire to save the life of a man they never met and couldn’t even see. He was standing above them, contemplating a jump that would likely end his life. But their presence, in those enormous vehicles, hopefully showed this desperate man that no matter how hard his challenge was, people cared. He mattered. His life was valuable. So valuable that people would dedicate their time, effort and money, to help him. And it must have worked as after those four hours, he came down from the ledge. These truckers had saved his life. In Hebrew, the word for a challenge or test is nisayon. It’s two-letter subroot is “nes” which means “miracle.” When the man climbed over the railing, all he saw was his challenge. But then, as those trucks pulled up, one by one, it was clear the miracle was being revealed as well. Right now is the Jewish holiday of Chanukah. It is all about fighting darkness through adding light. And that night, those truckers added an incredible amount of light.
