We don’t always think about it, but if we counted the hours, our children’s teachers spend more waking time with our kids during the day then we do as their parents. Which means that their teachers are some of the greatest influences in their lives. Courtney Adeleye most definitely recognized this with the woman who had taught her daughters for the last number of years. So when she found out that their teacher, who didn’t own a car and had never had a new car, spent hours a day in the cold, rain and heat taking multiple buses to school, she knew that something had to be done. Without hesitating, she went right out and bought their teacher a brand new car, and then presented it to her in front of their children so that they could see what expressing gratitude looks like. While the teacher felt like she had received a huge gift, Courtney knew very well that her being the teacher of their children was a gift that was more valuable than anything else. The Hebrew word for education is “chinuch” which shares the same root as “to inspire.” Because this teacher had inspired Courtney’s children, she was inspired to help their teacher in return, and now her children and all of us can be inspired by this act of kindness. What a true lesson all around in positive education.
