It is easy to think that for all school kids, the end of the school day is a time for celebration, and the end of the school week an even greater one. But unfortunately, for all too many children, a day off of school is a day with no food. Children receive breakfast and lunch in school. But then there are children that have nothing to eat for dinner once they are home. Or over the weekends. The Indiana School District wanted to change that. And they did. And in doing so, these children are now provided dinners and food over the weekends, and the huge amount of previously wasted food is now being used in the best way possible. And the lesson it is teaching these kids goes far beyond filling their stomachs. When we eat, we literally internalize and allow what we are consuming to become a part of us. For all those children who will no longer be going hungry, they know that their school is doing so much and working so hard to provide for them. And through that, what they are internalizing is generosity, love and support which will give them the sustenance they need, physically and emotionally, to succeed in their lives!
