By now you have likely seen the famous picture. In March, 2019, almost 5,000 stood in line for hours in the pouring rain to see if they were a stem cell match with the hope of saving a little boy’s life. Oscar Saxelby-Lee, from Worcester, England, has acute lymphoblatic leukemia and was given about 3 months to live when the stem cell drive was arranged. Now, over a year later, little Oscar is undergoing treatment in Singapore funded by donations that came in during the drive and other fundraising efforts, and while the donor match for Oscar in the end wasn’t successful, six other lives were helped due to that drive!
