Little three-year-old Quinn Waters had a stem cell transplant along with a high-dose of chemotherapy to fight his brain cancer. While these are life-saving measures, they unfortunately make him extremely vulnerable to disease by wiping out his immune system. So the doctors said he must remain inside as it would be too dangerous for him to be around other people. But being stuck inside is difficult and lonely for a little boy. But fortunately his community refused to allow him to be by himself. While he can’t be outside with them, and they can’t be inside with him, on a daily basis people come by throughout the day to show their support and love of Quinn and to ensure he both be entertained and never feel alone. And this is some of the best medicine he can get! In Judaism there is a concept of “bikur cholim” which is “visiting the sick.” The idea is that as much as medicine and rest is necessary, true healing comes from knowing you are not alone and that others care. This community is a beautiful example of the power of healing through caring.
