It’s the simple act of tying a shoe, but it was exactly what was needed at the time. Officer Jerrick Wilson was about to march with the American flag during the July 4th parade when he realized his shoe was untied. That is when 11-year-old Joshua Brown came over and tied it for him. It can be intimidating to come up to a police officer, let alone tie his shoe, but Joshua was in the right place at the right time and was able to do something that the officer simply couldn’t do for himself while holding the flag. And while it may not seem like a big deal, the message for all of us is vital. Sometimes the small things are actually big things for someone else, and if you are able to help, do so without hesitation. Joshua wants to grow up to be a police officer, and he already learned the first lesson in the service of others: help when you can and how you can. This July 4th, it was with a double knot!
