Nurse Brenda Buurstra, like all nurses, works long hours caring for numerous patients. But she doesn’t see it that way. She sees the individual and just like each person is different, so too is what they need to heal. Brenda is a nurse in hospice care. Unfortunately, most of her patients do not leave the facility as that is where they are sent to be treated with comfort and respect as their lives come to an end. When Robert Olson entered hospice, his daughter was told that he, too, would likely not be coming home. But during his stay, she witnessed something incredible. Nurse Brenda realized that Robert loved to hear singing. And so, she sang to him. And her beautiful voice, coupled with the attention and care she was giving him, began to restore his health and his strength. To everyone’s incredible relief, Robert was soon discharged to go home. Judaism teaches us that a song is the quill of the soul. And that words from the heart, enter the heart. Clearly her singing was the exact dose of medicine that he needed!
